Twitter’s We Are Hunted acquisition confirmed
By Chris Cooke | Published on Friday 12 April 2013
Twitter has confirmed that late last year it quietly acquired We Are Hunted, the music discovery service that monitored activity across social networks to track the most popular songs of the moment. The acquisition means that the We Are Hunted service as was will go offline, with the team focusing their efforts on building a new music-based offer within the Twitter platform.
The We Are Hunted acquisition was first reported on last month by C-Net, which claimed that a new Twitter app was very much in development that would provide users with lists of tunes, partly informed by what the people a user follows on Twitter are chatting about. It’s thought iTunes previews and SoundCloud streams would then be embedded within the app.
In a statement on their website, We Are Hunted’s founders have written: “The last few years have been an incredible experience made possible by the various staff, contractors and partners we’ve worked with. We would like to thank our board and investors, particularly Graeme Wood, who backed us in late 2007 and never stopped supporting and mentoring us. A huge thanks also to our users, who kept coming back each day to discover the great new music. While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team”.
They concluded: “There’s no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on at Twitter”.
