Tall Ships

Hailing from Falmouth but these days holed up in Brighton, Tall Ships released their eponymous debut EP in 2010. Now signed jointly to Big Scary Monsters and Blood & Biscuits, via the Pink Mist label group venture, Tall Ships released their debut album, ‘Everything Touching’, last October, prompting gasps and excitable reviews all round.

Currently out touring the UK, the band will play The Scala in London tonight. Ahead of the show, we asked the band to put together a playlist for us. This is what they had to say about it: “We’re out on a UK tour at the moment, so there’s a loose ‘tour’ theme running through this playlist. It’s mostly bands that we’ve toured/played/would love to play with”.

TALL SHIPS’ TEN
Subscribe to this playlist on Spotify, and then read on to find out more about the band’s choices:

01 Post War Years – Glass House
We’ve not played with these guys but have seen them loads. There’s a really great groove running though the whole of this song. Listen to it in headphones whilst walking through town and you’ll feel incredible.

02 Maps & Atlases – Remote And Dark Years
We’ve toured with these guys a couple of times now. Their attitude towards touring had a huge effect upon our approach. ‘Beware And Be Grateful’ is full of lush grooves and the production is so intricate and rewarding on repeated listening. ‘Remote And Dark Years’ is a real solid cut from it.

03 Kins – Lake Troposphere
Brighton’s best kept secret. Loads of people will be getting excited about these guys very soon. Their EP ‘Dancing Back And Forth In Whipped Cream’ is full of songs as great as this.

04 Hop Along – Tibetan Pop Stars
“Nobody deserves you the way that I do” – that statement written down almost sums up that intense egocentric feeling we have about certain other people. Hearing Frances Quinlan sing it actually describes that feeling.

05 Dutch Uncles – Fester
These guys’ new album ‘Out Of Touch In The Wild’ is phenomenal so it’s hard to pick one song from it, but if we had to it would be this one. It’s groovy, clever and most of all, loads of fun.

06 Emperor Yes – Wasps
These guys have been supporting us on our UK tour. This song sums up their fun party vibe perfectly, especially alongside the incredible video.

07 The Physics House Band – Titan
An absolute prog monster, and live it’s even better. These guys are releasing an EP on Blood & Biscuits very soon. It’s going to be RAD.

08 65daysofstatic – Tiger Girl
This song reminds me of watching 65DOS from a platform directly above a stage in Brussels. It was our first European tour and we were on first every night, leaving ample time to drink our and their rider dry. By the time it came to this song in the set we were running around side of stage in a state of intoxicated euphoria. This song evokes fond memories.

09 Three Trapped Tigers – Reset
An epic set closer. We’ve seen them play it so many times and it never gets boring. The best part is watching the drummer Adam Bett’s holding back with the straight kick until he finally explodes and lets rip. Awesome.

10 Rhye – The Fall
This was one of those songs that you stumble across on the internet and instantly fall in love with. I came across it by chance but was hooked straight away. It’s gentle melancholy really struck a chord. Listen to it late at night.
