Anna Von Hausswolff

Playing a sound she describes as ‘funeral pop’, notable for its heavy use of church organ, Swedish musician Anna Von Hausswolff released her second album, ‘Ceremony’, last month through City Slang. Not always an easy listen, it is nonetheless an album that rewards you greatly if you stick with it.

Next month she returns to the UK for two festival performances, at Green Man and End Of The Road, before a headline show at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen in London on 15 Oct. For an idea of how her live shows go down, check out this video of Von Hausswolff performing ‘Funeral For My Future Children’ from ‘Ceremony’.

As she prepares for a show in New York to celebrate the album’s US release tonight, we asked Anna Von Hausswolff to put together a playlist for us, which saw her scouring Spotify for the finest organ-based music she could find.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF’S GREAT ORGAN JAM
Subscribe to this playlist on Spotify, and then read on to find out more about Anna’s choices.

01 Jacula – Magister Dixit
Listen to that bass in the end! It’s crazy!

02 Bo Hansson – Första Vandringen
A great inspiration for me. He knows how to work with simple melodies and dynamics in the best possible way. Makes me happy.

03 Julian Jay Savarin – Child Of The Night
A Polish writer sent this to me. I love being in contact with good music researchers.

04 Arzachel – Garden Of Earthly Delights
This is truly a garden of earthly delights.

05 Sagor & Swing – Fugan Som Förlorade Sin Orgel Stämma
This is a Swedish duo inspired by the great Bo Hansson. Love their music as well. They also make me happy. This song is one of my favourites, so beautiful.

06 Jan Welmers – Minimal Music For Organ: Litanie, played by Marcus Goecke
‘Litanie’ was the first piece I heard by Jan Welmers. It opened up my eyes to church organ music.

07 Nico – Janitor Of Lunacy (Live)
I found this amazing live recording of Nico performing in Reims Cathedral in 1974 on Spotify(!). Hadn’t heard it before. In this concert she acted as support act for Tangerine Dream. I wish I had been there.

08 Tangerine Dream – Sunrise In The Third System
What’s not to love?

09 Sagor & Swing – Ingen Vals Om Inget Alls
Here we go again! They make me so happy!

10 Hermann Nitsch – Für Anton Bruckner
I found out about this guy just the other day. What a great musician! Hope you’ll have patience to listen through the entire song.
