HMV appoints new digital man
By Chris Cooke | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
HMV has brought in a new man to head up its soon to be relaunched digital offering. His job will be to recreate some of the flagging retailer’s past online triumphs, though with the quirky aside of trying to make them not shit.
Indeed, presumably HMV’s new owners Hilco really need the entertainment retail firm to finally crack it with online this time – despite facing tough competition across the business models, from Amazon, Apple and Spotify et al – to assure the company’s long-term success, as the high street continues to struggle.
James Coughlan is the former digital music man at Vodafone, who has also consulted for Samsung, Channel 4 and Universal. He will oversee the relaunch of HMV’s e-commerce operations this Autumn, and will likely lead a UK launch of The Vault, the streaming service already operated by the also Hilco-owned HMV Canada.
