I always think the best way to top off a very enjoyable weekend is by watching a really disturbing film, so last night I went off to the cinema to watch ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’. It was very good, and adapts the book brilliantly, which is a particular feat because I wasn’t sure how that could be possible. I also saw ‘Dogtooth’ on Friday, because I like to start the weekend with a really disturbing film too. But yeah, you’re not here to find out what films I saw this weekend, you want to know what’s going to happen in the world of music this week. Well, let’s take a look…

01: EMI sale announcement? Yeah, I promised I’d keep putting this in the Five Day Forecast until it happened and I’m a man of my word. And the business commentators in this weekend’s papers seemed more sure than ever that this week we’d get word from Citigroup as to who they are selling EMI to, though it’s possible they are now just making this prediction on a weekly basis too. Last week some commentators started to wobble on previous predictions a sale would definitely go ahead – they wondering what’s taking Team Citi so long to make a decision one way or another – though our insider contacts seem certain a sale will happen this year and it will involve splitting EMI into two. Anyway, we’ll probably find out this week. Or not.

02: Unpleasant court hearings. The inquest into the death of Amy Winehouse will reconvene on Wednesday, at which point the results of toxicology tests to determine the exact cause of her death should be revealed. But before that, the two men accused of planning to abduct Joss Stone from her Devon home and kill her are due back in court today. This may too answer some questions surrounding the events prior to their arrest in June, though possibly not as this is a routine hearing and not the start of a full trial.

03: Liverpool Music Week. One of my favourite things about Liverpool Music Week is that it runs for almost three weeks. Of course, as well as a total misunderstanding of what constitutes a week, there’s also a whole load of great music crammed into its programme, which does justify the ten extra days the apparently week-long event contains. The Horrors are this year’s headliners, but also on offer are the likes of Ghostpoet, Dels, Frankie & The Heartstrings, Vessels, and the marvellous Wrongtom.

04: New releases. Justice have finally decided it might be time to release a second album, which they have done today, it already having received the CMU seal of approval. However, the big release of the week is Coldplay’s ‘Mylo Xyloto’. It’s a Coldplay album, yes, but it has Rihanna on it, which makes it mildly more interesting. And speaking of collaborations, Lou Reed and Metallica’s album is out this week. Although we thought them a little silly, it might be best to check out the 30 second clips on SoundCloud before you dive in and listen to that one in full. Also out this week are the latest offering from Tom Waits and a whole load of cassette reissues from Of Montreal. However, my big tip for this week is the gorgeous debut album from Active Child, ‘You Are All I See’.

05: Gigs. Right, this is a very, very busy week for gigs, so I’ll be brief. Florence And The Machine will play Hackney Empire tomorrow and stream it live on the Guardian’s website, PJ Harvey will play the Royal Albert Hall, WHY? are over on an acoustic tour, Ryan Adams has two UK shows, HTRK play London’s Cargo tonight, The Deer Tracks have various London gigs, Adam Ficek’s RKC kick off a tour at 93 Feet East in London, Battlekat, Johnossi and Karin Park play Nordic showcase night Ja Ja Ja on Thursday at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, Foxes will be at Shoreditch’ Electricity Showrooms, Three Trapped Tigers are at The Garage on Wednesday, plus Noel Gallagher, Britney Spears, Arctic Monkeys, The Rapture, Scroobius Pip, Wilco, Patrick Wolf, Disclosure, Azari & III, and Real Estate are all on tour.

And don’t forget to download or stream and just generally listen to this week’s CMU podcast. It’s a reasonably good one this week, so if you’ve never listened to it before, now’s a great time to have your hopes raised for future editions before being dashed on the floor next week. Of course, I’m just being modest, it’s actually the greatest podcast on the internet. The greatest CMU podcast on the internet, anyway.
