Good morning, and welcome to Week 42 of 2011. It officially starts here. It also means it’s worryingly close to the end of the year. I hope you’ve all started making your lists. Any lists. The end of the year is all about lists.

For an example of a list, why not take a look at this week’s Five Day Forecast, which is a prime example of a loosely ordered, pre-emptive list. They’re good those ones. In simpler terms, it’s a list of things that are (probably) going to happen this week. I would have thought you knew this by now, frankly.

01: EMI statement? That’s right, I’m going to keep running this in the Five Day Forecast until it actually happens. Then you can all congratulate me on being right when it does. One thing’s for sure, the announcement of a new owner (or more likely owners) of EMI is more likely to happen this week than it was last week. Despite various London and New York media speculating differently over the weekend, we are still under the impression Citigroup will sell now rather than later, despite the bids being lower than originally hoped, and that as a result the music company will be sold off in two parts – recordings and publishing – to maximise the profits the sale can generate.

02: Stone Roses to reform? Everyone seems very confident that The Stone Roses are going to hold a press conference on Tuesday to announce that the four original members plan to play two shows in Manchester next year. Let’s just take a moment to remember the time John Squire made a piece of art saying that he had “no desire whatsoever to desecrate the grave of seminal Manchester pop group The Stone Roses”, and when Mani said he was “disgusted” at the suggestion that Squire and Ian Brown attending his mother’s funeral meant they were considering a reunion. Fingers crossed they will reiterate these statements tomorrow. I fear they won’t.

03: BASCA Gold Badge Awards. The British Academy Of Songwriters, Composers And Authors will present another batch of its Gold Badge Awards on Wednesday at the Savoy in London. The awards “celebrate the careers of people who have made a special contribution to Britain’s music and entertainment industry, both those in the limelight and those who work behind the scenes often without public recognition”. Recipients this year include John Leckie, Ray Davies, Mick Hucknall, Joan Aramtrading, and Dennis Waterman.

04: New releases. Want new releases, do you? Well, how about the debut album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds? Tell you what, why not listen to that one on your streaming service of choice first? You know, I wouldn’t want you to spend your money and then be disappointed, that’s all I’m saying. Tell you what, spend your money instead on M83 and Yann Tiersen’s new albums this week. And pick up the new singles from Niki And The Dove, Visions Of Trees, Grass House, Asobi Seksu and Gruff Rhys. In fact, Gruff’s single accompanies an iPhone app-based game, which is also out this week. It’s all go.

05: Gigs. I’m going to see Jens Lekman tonight. I’d invite you too but it’s sold out now, sorry. He’s playing in Manchester on Wednesday, if that helps. Or you could head over to see Feist at The London Palladium tonight. Or how about newcomer Foxes at the Old Queens Head on Thursday? They’ll all be good. And there are some tours going too. On the road this week are Bon Iver, Xzibit, Yann Tiersen, Wretch 32, Wu Lyf , Pop Will Eat Itself, Bardo Pond, Young Knives, The Leisure Society and Ash, complete with Charlotte Hatherley, to play their ‘Free All Angels’ album.

And last week we did a podcast. A bloody podcast! It had talking in it and everything. Talking about stuff that happened in the music world last week. You can listen to it as well. Right here, or in the player below. Listen to it.
