Edinburgh quintet PET self-released their debut single, ‘What You Building?’, through Bandcamp in July, and saw it quickly propagate amongst what I’d rather not have to refer to as ‘tastemakers’ (people who put the effort in when it comes to finding new music, let’s say). Anyway, the song’s laidback guitar and distant, dreamy vocals were things that people liked.
The band will release the follow-up, ‘Middle Child Syndrome’, on 7 Nov. Louder and grimier than ‘What You Building?’, it still might be described as ‘dreamy’ when compared to other bands. And if you’re in the mood for comparisons with other bands, then do check out the b-side, because it’s a cover of ‘Love Buzz’, the Shocking Blue song probably made more famous by Nirvana. So, two bands you can compare them with there. In PET’s hands the track is pulled away from its garage psyche roots and taken into more lo-fi psychedelia. It’s altogether more of a freakout, if a slightly sleepy one.
But don’t take all this talk of dreaminess and sleepiness to mean PET are boring though. They’re far from it, creating four minute pop songs to get lost in. Just check out their version of ‘Love Buzz’ here:
