CMU Approved
Approved: Novella
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 9 October 2013
With Haim so big in the game, times are hard for other long-haired girl trios (with anonymous man drummers), even if, like London’s Novella, they aren’t anything like Haim. Anyway, I’ll disregard Haim and get to the real gist of all this, which is one-time CMU Playlist-makers Novella and their new song ‘Follow’.
Released on 14 Oct as part of the band’s five-track ‘Murmurs’ cassette package, it sidles quietly away from the Vivian Girls-ish garage of past singles like the ‘He’s My Morning’ into foggier prog realms, idling in a drowsy, low-profile riff till singer Hollie Warren’s voice kicks in like the world’s most placid pay-off. It’s kind of unsatisfying, but only in a way that leaves you wanting to play it again.
