Approved: Gorilla Vs Bear Halloween mix
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 26 October 2011
As per a now three year-old tradition, Chris Cantalini at Gorilla Vs Bear has collated another mix of sterling indie selections in celebration of this year’s spooky season. Even for those who are sick to death of Halloween’s irksome trappings, you might just appreciate the mix all the same.
Acting as the absolute antidote to overcooked ‘Monster Mash’-type stuff, this particular mix features the all-pervasive presence of dark-pop dabblers Balam Acab, How To Dress Well, Oneohtrix Point Never and Burial. In my personal favourite three-track portion, Grimes shrieks like a glassy-eyed doll come alive, Holy Other twists Asobi Seksu’s ‘Trails’ into a sinister shadow of its former self, and Panda Bear’s ‘Scheherezade’ echoes as if from a haunted cabaret.
As strange and sultry as a waft of warm graveyard air, the mix never rises beyond a thick, treacly tempo, taking its last gasp with the gorgeously-named Austin outfit How I Quit Crack, and their truly, truly evil spin on ‘Wicked Game’. An imperfect soundtrack for a costume rave, but ripe accompaniment for some candle-lit apple-bobbing, stream the mix below and download it here.
