YouTube announced yesterday that it would soon be offering more content owners the option to charge users to access the channels they operate.

The Google-owned video site launched subscription-based channels with a select group of partners in May. It was always assumed that the option to charge for content posted to YouTube, rather than taking a cut of advertising revenue, would be expanded out in due course.

In yesterday’s announcement at the VidCon event in California, YouTube said it would open up the subscription option to any content owner with a channel boasting over 10,000 subscribers at somepoint in the autumn.

Channel operators will also get access to better analytics, will be able to message followers directly, and will get use of something called the YouTube Audio Library, featuring 100 royalty-free instrumental tracks that can be synced with videos for free.

As previously reported, a recent report in Variety said that those content partners already operating subscription services on YouTube had seen modest uptake to date, though its still early days.
