Yoko Ono to direct Meltdown 2013
By CMU Editorial | Published on Friday 9 November 2012
Yoko Ono says she’s “deeply honoured” to have been pronounced director of the London Southbank Centre’s Meltdown festival for June 2013, also its 20th anniversary edition. Ono has appeared as a guest at the fest on two past occasions, once by invitation of 2005 host Patti Smith, and again in 2009 under Ornette Coleman’s curatorial tenure.
Speaking to The Observer, a media partner of the event, the artist and musician says: “I’m not pursuing big names for the sake of big names. I’m thinking along the lines of a concept, which is more refreshing. There will definitely be an element of feminism and the plight of women, I am very interested in that. All women are icons of feminism and we have a responsibility to that. I am thinking of having one or two events where I ask men to say something strong about themselves too”.
