Years & Years

Don’t forget the BBC’s Sound Of poll, whatever you do. If we all turn our backs on it for just five seconds BBC bosses will probably axe it in favour of creating some other big-spend scheme designed exclusively to present Pharrell Williams with another bloody award.

So yes, having published its long list way back when in that crazy era of history which academics now call 2014, this week the Beeb has been announcing which of the fifteen buzzy new artists the pundits of Britain were buzzing about six weeks ago we should actually be paying attention to here in 2015.

And in case you care, they are, in reverse order: George The Poet, Raury, Stormzy, James Bay and Years & Years. So that’s exciting isn’t it? Can we have a “woo” for the final five please? And a “woo, woo” for the overall winners? And a “woo, woo, woo” for me. Because I’ve been working really hard this week and almost certainly deserve it.

Hey, here’s a quote from Years & Years: “We can’t really get our heads round it, [frontman] Olly [Alexander] nearly passed out when we found out, it was so surreal and emotional. It feels like it means we’ve got a real shot, which means the world to us. People are going to listen to what we’re going to do, and we’ve just got to not muck it up. We’ve got to make the most of it and deliver”. Too right. We’ll have no mucking it up thank you very much.

And now a quote from Huw Stephens, because why the hell not? “Years & Years have already and will continue to capture imaginations with their electronic melodies and lively on stage sets. They are a young band with loads of ideas and a clear vision of the music they want to make, and that will take them far this year”.

With all this buzz and support we’re sure to be hearing from these guys for years and years to come. BOOM, Comedy Gold! Can we have another “woo, woo, woo” for me please? No? OK.
