XL confirms Jai Paul Bandcamp album unofficial and unapproved

XL Recordings has confirmed that the batch of Jai Paul songs that surfaced online this weekend arrived there unofficially, with neither the label nor the artist involved in the upload.
And while online leaks of unreleased material are nothing new these days, this one did have two interesting elements. First, the songs were unfinished recordings of old songs by Paul, and not related to his upcoming debut album. And second, the leak occurred not on YouTube or the file-sharing networks, but on Bandcamp, with the leaker profiting from the unofficial track distribution.
In a statement published by Pitchfork, XL said yesterday: “As widely reported, on Sunday 14 Apr, music by XL Recordings artist Jai Paul was illegally made available via a fake Bandcamp account. This music was not uploaded by Jai and it’s not his debut album – it is a collection of various unfinished recordings from Jai’s past. Neither XL or Jai will take any money from the sale of this music. We have been working with Bandcamp and PayPal to resolve this situation and they have told us all purchases will be refunded within the next seven days”.
It now remains to be seen if any action is taken against whoever it was who started selling these tracks. As previously reported, although Paul issued a statement distancing himself from the leak on Monday, there was some speculation that the whole thing was an elaborate publicity stunt for the upcoming album release.
