WhoSampled to stage second Samplethon this weekend
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 24 November 2015
Having staged their first ever Samplethon at The Great Escape in Brighton in 2014, WhoSampled return with the second such event at Metropolis Studios in London this weekend, with Roni Size among those set to judge.
The sample-tracking website is this time teaming up with Universal Music Publishing’s production music division, and specifically its Bruton Music library, to give 20 producers access to a stack of music from which to sample, borrow, remix and re-invent, all in the creation of new tracks.
The challenge, says organisers, is “to produce a new track using the provided material against the clock, with mentorship from a team of world-class producers, among them Mercury Prize winner Roni Size, Digital Soundboy’s Breakage and The Herbaliser’s Ollie Teeba”. The judges will then judge and pick their favourite track.
WhoSampled’s Nadav Poraz explains that “this is a rare opportunity to sample from these highly regarded recordings performed by world class musicians, free from the legal shackles often associated with sampling”, while Bruton Music’s Andrew Stannard adds: “Samplethon is an amazing opportunity for us to get our music out to new producers and it will be exciting to hear what they’ve done”.
Any budding producer interested in taking part in the Samplethon can still apply for a place, full details are online at www.whosampled.com/samplethon
