You remember that petition on the White House’s We The People website calling for American resident Justin Bieber to be deported back to Canada? Of course you do. It got over 270,000 signatures, which meant the US president’s people had to respond. Well that response has now come. However, much to everyone’s disappointment, the response was that there was no response.

“Sorry to disappoint”, said a statement. “But we won’t be commenting on this one”.

“No!” You’re probably now screaming. “They must say more than that!”

Well, you’re in luck. Given that the White House doesn’t actually have the power to deport Bieber anyway, the statement went on to point out that it never comments directly on individual legal cases, so to “avoid the appearance of improper influence”. Not that there is any legal case to deport the singer, but he has had a few brushes with the law of late, most of which are still working their way through the courts.

The White House did have some things to say about immigration in general though – using the petition to lay out its proposals for reform in this area, and holding up Bieber’s success as a measure for why more people should be allowed though US borders legally, rather than the current situation where eleven million people are working illegally within the country.

“Not only is it the right thing to do morally, it’s the right thing for our country”, said the statement. “Independent economists say immigration reform will grow our economy and shrink our deficits by almost $1 trillion in the next 20 years. For those of you counting at home, that’s 12.5 billion concert tickets – or 100 billion copies of Mr Bieber’s debut album”.

And what would you rather have, America? Your incredibly tough border restrictions or 100 billion Bieber albums?
