Universal/Republic signs Vine stars
By Andy Malt | Published on Wednesday 26 March 2014
Universal/Republic has signed US folk-pop duo Us off the back of their success on mini-video sharing site, Vine. Welcome to 2014.
The married couple self-released their debut album, ‘No Matter Where You Are’, last year, and while promoting it began posting six second snippets of themselves performing other people’s songs on Vine late last year. The idea took off, and now they’ve amassed over 2.5 million followers on the Twitter-owned website.
Honing in on the duo’s original work rather than their mini-covers, Republic’s Senior VP A&R Nate Albert told The Hollywood Reporter: “There’s a universality to what they’re doing, and I don’t think there’s a glass ceiling to it. Their songs are like walking through the birth of their relationship, and it’s really rare that you see something that has that level of earnestness to it. These are songs that everybody can relate to, but there’s an elegance to how they do it”.
The label will released a remixed version of ‘No Matter Where You Are’ later this year. While you wait, why not endlessly watch this six second cover of ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams?
