TuneCore has added Facebook audio recognition to the list of services available to its artists that will enable acts using the independent distribution platform to tap into the social network’s new Shazam-like audio identification feature, which is due to be rolled out on the Facebook iOS and Android apps in the coming months, initially in the US.

If Facebook users enable the new functionality, the app will automatically identify songs around them and their device, and then prompt the user to share status updates about any identified tracks. Independent artists will be able to make sure Facebook’s system recognises their music via TuneCore’s platform.

The company hasn’t yet been able to do any testing, to see what sort of conversion rate, from identification to posted update, the feature is likely to get, TuneCore CEO Scott Ackerman told CMU.

However, he continued: “We know that Facebook is the social platform our artists feel is most important for them when connecting with fans. In a survey we recently conducted, 65.11% of respondents selected Facebook as either the first or second in importance out of six choices (other options were YouTube, Twitter, Personal Websites, Instagram and Bandcamp)”.

He added: “The sheer significance of the platform for artists’ promotional efforts leads us to the belief that implementations of audio recognition will help artists get their music heard by more fans”.

As well as the new Facebook feature, TuneCore has also integrated TwitMusic into its dashboard. TwitMusic is a service whichh allows users to engage and incentivise followers on Twitter.

“Social media is an invaluable tool for independent musicians looking to find and grow audiences all over the world” said Ackerman. “That is the primary reason that we found TwitMusic to be a perfect fit for providing another means for bringing their social media interaction with fans to a new level”.
