Reports of growing revenues in the recorded music markets of several European countries have all noted the important role the rapidly expanding streaming music sector is now playing in ensuring that digital growth is starting to out run declines in CD sales.

Though, of course, relatively speaking the streaming market is still young, and potentially volatile with it. And whereas a pretty standard approach now prevails across the download space, the streaming companies are still very much tinkering with their business models.

In a CMU Digest report at the start of the year, Business Editor Chris Cooke noted: “Whereas most download stores operate in pretty much the same way, in the streaming space there is lots of variation between services, and, indeed, most services are constantly refining their business models”. Key variations include whether a platform offers ‘listen’ or ‘access’ services (to use analyst Mark Mulligan’s terms), and whether the service is subscription or advertising based.
