TGE: CMU’s Andy Malt tips some bands
By CMU Editorial | Published on Wednesday 11 May 2011
As part of the CMU team Andy has been involved in programming the convention. But he’s also rather excited about the festival side of things. We asked him to name the things he’s most excited about. Here’s what he said…
DJ Shadow: As well as appearing in conversation, DJ Shadow will be bringing his ‘Shadowsphere’ show to the UK for the first time. Expect to be wowed by the amazing visuals and the prowess with which Shadow reconstructs some of his best known tracks. Thursday, 9.30pm, Dome Show
Oh Land: Danish songstress Oh Land released her debut album ‘Fauna’ in her home country in 2008. Since then, she’s quite rightly been picked up by Sony Music and generated a whirlwind of praise around herself. Friday, 8.45pm, Digital
Alexander Tucker: If you’ve never seen Alexander Tucker perform before, then move him right up to the top of your ‘must see’ list immediately. He uses a range of instruments to build up layers of loops creating folky post-rock soundscapes right before your very eyes. Thursday, 9.30pm, Pavillion Theatre
Katy B: Often lauded as the queen of dubstep, Katy B’s debut album owes just as much to early 90s dance as it does modern sounds, making it a pop classic in waiting. Friday, 11.30pm, Corn Exchange
Becoming Real: This rising grime producer made an underground splash last year with his ‘Spectre’ EP, a collaboration with east London rapper Trim. As it becomes increasingly clear just how talented he is, now is the perfect time to get yourself right up to speed. Saturday, 8.00pm, Audio
EMA: Guitar noise, well-crafted songs and a knack for pitching analogue and digital sounds against each other, I suspect EMA will be a name you’ll hear a lot following her TGE performance. Saturday, 8.30pm, Horatios
The Deer Tracks: Swedish electronica duo The Deer Tracks’s 2009 debut album ‘Aurora’ was a firm favourite amongst Team CMU, who invited them over to London to play their first UK gig. That show was breathtaking, and now, two years later, they continue to impress with their equally bold and fragile sound. Saturday, 10.30pm, The Loft
Sukh Knight: Among many other things, Arts Council England are supporting British Asian artists at TGE this year, including this east London dubstep producer Sukh Knight, who brings traditional Indian sounds into the genre with impressive results. Saturday, 12.30am, Coalition
Mechanical Bride: Singer-songwriter Lauren Doss’s stark, piano-led songwriting style is perhaps best showcased to newcomers on her cover of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’, which hopefully she’ll be treating the hometown crowd to at TGE. Thursday, 9.15pm, Prince Albert
Frontiers: Frontiers are a rock band. No gimmicks, they’re just four guys playing rock music. But that’s what makes them stand out. Definitely ones to watch.
PLUS THREE FROM OUR FEATURED COUNTRY IRELAND…
Villagers: One of many great bands from TGE’s featured country this year: Ireland, a few days later they’ll be at the Ivor Novello Awards where ‘Being A Jackal’ is nominated. Thursday, 10.00pm, Unitarian Church & Friday, 11.45pm, Pavilion Theatre
James Vincent McMorrow: Not a million miles away from the Villagers sound, this guy has been rapidly expanding his fanbase of late both with a raft of heart-tugging original songs and, last month, a beautiful, tearjerking cover of Willow Smith’s ‘Whip My Hair’. Friday, 9.00pm, Unitarian Church
And So I Watch You From Afar: Part of the Irish underground rock scene’s Richter Collective, these guys move us away from wistful acoustic folk and throw some breakneck instrumental rock all over the place. Thursday, 9.45pm, Jam & Saturday 3pm, Prince Albert
