Q&A: The Saturdays

The Saturdays

Right, here come the all important facts, people. Consisting of Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman – formerly of S Club 8 formerly S Club Juniors – along with Mollie King, Una Healy and Vanessa White, The Saturdays released their debut single ‘If This Is Love’ in July 2008.

Their debut album ‘Chasing Lights’ duly followed in October, peaking at number nine in the good old music charts, exactly the same position reached by their second album, ‘Wordshaker’, which was released exactly a year later. I reckon there’s some voodoo at play. This week the girl group release new single ‘Missing You’, the opening track from their new mini-album ‘Headlines’, which follows on 16 Aug. Knowing just how many fans The Saturdays have among the CMU faithful, we stalked Vanessa for a whole week until we persuaded her to answer our Same Six Questions.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
When we first got together we were in the studio loads. We had lots and lots of tracks and worked with a writer called Ina Wroldsen, who worked with us for most of the first album. We took it from there really, and just carried on.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
There are loads of tracks on it that we like, and which we enjoyed writing and recording. We had a bit of a break at the beginning of the year, but wanted to get these songs out in 2010, before we start work on our next full album. So that’s where the idea of a mini-album came from.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
We all sit in a room together, whether it’s three of us, or two of us, and we sit there and think about what we want to write about. And just chat and feed off each other really.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Really cool pop tracks. Acts like us, straight up pop!

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
I’d say it’s fun pop!

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
We want it to do well, obviously. We really like it, so we just hope everyone else does! Obviously, after this, we’ve got the more singles coming out from the album, plus we’ve got a book and a jewellery range, so it’s all going on! We definitely want to do more albums and keep developing our sound and style into the future.
