Spotify has begun testing a browser-based player for its users. Until now, access to Spotify has only ever been available through its proprietary software – even when using its embeddable player it loads the application in the background. This, the company has always maintained, is because standalone software makes for a better user experience and sound quality.

As such, it’s thought that the new browser-based player is intended to provide users with alternative access to the streaming service’s catalogue when using a third-party computer, rather than as a complete replacement for the existing bespoke player. However, some consumers don’t like having to install software, so it may also serve to increase the company’s userbase further.

It is possible to access the new player for some users now via this link.

UPDATE: Clicking this link should enable you to reach the new player if the above URL doesn’t automatically redirect you to it.
