Spotify announces Tango alliance

Spotify has announced an alliance with Tango, which isn’t as exciting as it sounds, cos it’s the video-call mobile app, not the sugary fizzy fruit drinks.

Under the alliance, users of the Tango app – which currently number 160 million apparently – will be able to access 30 second clips from tracks in the Spotify catalogue, should that be of interest to any of them. Although best known for enabling video calls, the Tango app already also offers other services like games and multimedia.

The music clips will be available to any Tango user based in a country where Spotify operates, and they won’t require an account with the streaming service to access the previews, though presumably for the digital music company the aim of the alliance is to persuade some of the app’s users that they should sign up.

Confirming the tie-up, Spotify’s strategic partnerships dude Tom Hsieh told The Next Web: “Mobile messaging apps like Tango have helped remove the friction from sharing content that had existed previously, so it’s a natural platform to help us realise our global growth aspirations and provide everyone around the world with music for the right moment”.

It’s not entirely clear how this latest Spotify deal totally screws over ever artist in the world ever (hell, the digital firm probably insists it actually helps promote their music to new audiences), but presumably it does. I’ll give Thom a call later and see if he’s worked it out yet.
