Spotify announces family plan

Ah families. I liked families. Do you remember families? They were good weren’t they? Then the internet came along and screwed everything up, suddenly families were free, and that meant no one could afford to make new families anymore, and soon they were a thing of the past. But still, there’s always photos of cats.

Anyway, Spotify is launching a new family plan, which means that if Bertha has a ten pounds a month super-duper premium account with the streaming platform, Mr Bertha, and their three children Bert, Barry and Boudica can all have their own super-duper premium accounts for a mere five pounds per month each.

It’s a moderately clever idea, in that Bertha, Mr Bertha, Bert, Barry and Boudica are probably all already making use of the one ten pounds a month account, but this way, by allowing concurrent listening and individual playlist accounts for each person and such like, Spotify can squeeze some more cash out of the Barrington family.

It’s “one of the most asked for features from our audience” said Spotify Chief Content Officer Ken Parks, after confirming that the new family plan would be rolling out in the next few weeks. Which is, presumably, why Spotify Family has been developed. I mean, Team Spot wouldn’t have nicked the idea off Rdio or Beats who have both had family plans for a while, would they?

At the last official count (in May), Spotify said it had 40 million active users of which a quarter were paying for the service. Though The Guardian cites label sources this week who say the total number of users has since then topped 50 million. Which is nice. 50 million users.

Ah users. I liked users. Do you remember users? They were good weren’t they? Then the internet came along and screwed everything up, suddenly users were free, and that meant no one could afford to make new users anymore, and soon they were a thing of the past. But still, there’s always revenge porn.
