Sony Music acquires Philadelphia International Records catalogue
By Chris Cooke | Published on Friday 14 February 2014
Sony Music has announced the acquisition of the catalogue of seminal soul label Philadelphia International Records, the record company set up by songwriting and production duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff in 1971.
Sony’s catalogue label Legacy Recordings already had access to some PIR recordings, and oversaw a number of digital releases of that catalogue last year.
The new deal brings all the label’s recordings together, and will result in a series of further reissues later this year including records from the likes of The Jacksons, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Three Degrees and Patti LaBelle, with the initial re-release campaign kicking off here in the UK.
