Skindred frontman Benji Webbe has been left with scars on his face and neck, following an attack with a broken glass in Newport on Saturday night. The musician had been attempting to break up an argument as he walked home.

“I went outside with my girlfriend, Julie, and I saw about three or four girls arguing”, he told Wales Online. “As we went past them I tried to calm them down and said ‘calm down will you’ jokingly. One of the women turned to me and came within four inches of my face, screaming and shouting”.

The woman then fell over and broke her glass, he said. When she stood up, she attacked him. “I thought she had slapped me in the face”, he said, only realising something more serious had happened when another man told him that he was bleeding from his face and neck. “It was about two inches from my jugular vein. At first I didn’t realise the seriousness of the damage. I could have not been here today”.

However, he added: “I have forgiven the person who did this to me and have no hatred towards them. I had a wonderful night [otherwise] and I have had calls and messages from all over the world wishing me well. It’s a nice feeling to know that people care about you. This will not stop me from going out in Newport because it’s a great community [but] people need to think about their actions when they’ve been drinking”.

Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault, which took place outside the Crosskeys pub some time between midnight and 1.30am on Saturday morning.
