Single review: Vato Gonzalez feat Foreign Beggars – Badman Riddim (Ministry Of Sound)

Vato Gonzalez

Dutch House DJ Vato Gonzalez produced the instrumental that forms the backing of this track last year, gaining favourable reviews from the likes of Zane Lowe and Annie Mac for doing so.

But what can you do to make an existing track bigger? I know, get UK hip hop and grime outfit Foreign Beggars to add lyrics on top and turn it into summer smash hit! This musical cocktail just epitomises what Gonzalez’s so called dirty house genre is about.

With its gritty bass line, and samples of Pharoahe Monch’s ‘Simon Say’s’, ‘Badman Riddim’ is vibrant, bouncy and just darn right funky, True, it isn’t a complex piece of music, but it’s this simplicity which will have this pumping from every twentysomething’s stereo.

With Chipmunk, Lethal Bizzle, Wiley, Skepta, Tinchy Stryder, Kano and others harking from the same scene having had such a great couple of years, this song should slip into the public’s consciousness nicely. As the summer slowly reaches our shores, be sure to be hearing this everywhere! SD
