Simfy winds down, promotes Deezer
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 5 May 2015
An early player in streaming in Europe – Germany-based Simfy – which was the main streaming music platform in the German market until Spotify finally got its licences sorted in the country, has seemingly wound down, directing its subscribers to sign up to Deezer. The latter has confirmed that it now has a partnership in place with the faltering German service.
Simfy seemed to lose access to Warner Music’s catalogue earlier this year, suggesting that it was having problems maintaining its licensing obligations to the big rights owners. It’s thought that another major has now let its licence with the service lapse, which has forced the wind down, because without the Warner and either the Sony or Universal catalogues, that puts a massive hole in the Simfy repertoire.
It’s not entirely clear what it means for the Simfy company, though German media are reporting that the firm is set to be dissolved and creditors have been told to come forward.
