Sam Smith tops BBC Sound Of 2014 poll

So, Sam Smith has been chosen to be the Sound Of 2014, and finally we all know what to listen to for the rest of the year. Unless, of course, you’re following The Telegraph’s lead and listening to other artists as well. I’m not sure there’s any future in that sort of attitude though.

Smith was the artist most pundits on the panel for the poll picked as their perfect pop pick for 2014. Arguably, he breaks the survey’s own rule of tipped artists “not being generally known by the UK public”, having featured on Disclosure’s number eleven hit ‘Latch’ in 2012 and Naughty Boy’s number one ‘La La La’ last May. But who pays attention to the names of featured artists, really? And it’s not like any of his releases as a lead artist have charted, so let’s just let him enjoy this. Honestly, you all do like to moan, don’t you?

Given the news, Smith, who has also been named the BRITs Critics’ Choice, screamed from the rooftops: “I’m completely speechless. It’s a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and the BBC in this way. I really didn’t expect it. Being amongst names like Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Adele is just incredible because they inspire my music so much”.

The complete Sound Of 2014 top five is as follows:

1. Sam Smith
2. Ella Eyre
3. Banks
4. Sampha
5. George Ezra
