Sacked War Horse musicians go to High Court
By Andy Malt | Published on Monday 14 April 2014
Five musicians took the National Theatre to the High Court last week, seeking an injunction to allow them back into the West End production of ‘War Horse’.
The musicians had their roles in the show cut to just a few minutes of performance time in March last year, and were then cut entirely last month, replaced with pre-recorded music.
They say that they were given only eleven days notice that their contracts were being terminated, and continued to show up for nightly performances, only be turned away.
The musicians argue that the move to cut them out of the show was a breach of contract adding that they are now enforcing that contract with a view to returning to the production. But the NT countered that the show was a play with music, rather than a musical, and as such did not require live music.
A ruling on the case is expected this week.
