Pop show-off Robbie Williams warned his fans last Friday (ie well in advance) that he was going to spring a new LP titled ‘Under The Radar: Volume One’ on them today. And so that’s what he did. Surprise! (Whether it was a ‘surprise’ to his sometime bandmates in Take That, whose new album is also out today, we don’t know).

So in short, ‘Under The Radar: Volume One’ is made up of lots of songs that, says Williams, “for whatever reason, didn’t make it” onto any of his official albums so far. Potentially because they were sidelined by his label for being a) not commercially viable and/or b) a bit shit. Less commercially viable, logic dictates, than ‘Rudebox’. Which is hard to imagine.

Oh also, the ‘volume one’ bit of album’s title hints that it’s only the first in a series of rejects collections Robbie is going to release, as I’m sure you’d figured as soon as you saw the ‘volume one’ bit of the title. Still I thought I’d say it, just in case.

Robbie – and his mean-looking cat – did the big reveal via a cheeky little video clip, in which he (Robbie, that is) said: “I’ll let you into a secret, Guy Chambers isn’t happy with me putting these songs on this album. He thinks I’m a lunatic for not putting them on an album that we’ve promoted with TV performances and at radio stations and a big tour”.

“But I’m an impetuous bugger, and I want them out now, now, now!” he added, deafeningly.
