Queen top 60th anniversary albums chart
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 5 July 2016
Queen’s classic 1981 album ‘Greatest Hits’ is the most popular album of the last 60 years, according to the Official Charts Company, which has now been counting for that long. “I always thought the band showed promise”, says Brian May. “I feel good”, adds Roger Taylor.
So that’s nice. ABBA hits album ‘Gold’ is in second place, while The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ is the highest ranking non-greatest-hits album, in at position three. Though Adele’s ’21’ is trying its best to usurp the Fab Four, it being at number four.
Says charts chief Martin Talbot on all this: “In celebration of 60 years of the UK’s Official Album Chart, it is fantastic that we can crown Queen as the kings of the Anniversary Top 60. With seven albums by British acts in the all-time Top 10, and Adele’s ’21’ now challenging The Beatles’ ‘Sgt Pepper’ to be the biggest selling studio album of all time, it is a great list for homegrown talent”.
