PPL completes deal with US royalties body

UK recording rights collecting society PPL has announced a new agreement with the AFM/AFTRA Fund in the US.

This Fund exists primarily to handle the distribution of royalties due to performers – both featured artists and session musicians – from the play of their music (sound recordings, that is) on internet and satellite radio stations (no royalties are currently paid, of course, by terrestrial radio stations in the US).

Those royalties are initially collected from webcasters and Sirius XM by collecting organisation SoundExchange, which passes the 50% due to artists (rather than labels) onto the Fund, which is co-owned by the American Federation Of Musicians and The American Federation Of Television & Radio Artists. You’re following all this, yes?

Anyway, as a result of the new deal, PPL will pay money into the AFM/AFTRA Fund if and when royalties are due to the performers it represents from the airing of their music in the UK, while the Fund will pay back to PPL for the benefit of the performers it represents if and when their music is played on American web or satellite radio.

PPL international man Laurence Oxenbury told CMU: “Given the importance of the [UK and US] markets, it is critical for our members that we develop and open up all possible revenue streams between the two countries and we are delighted that non-featured as well as featured performers will now be paid for the limited rights that exist in the US”.
