Zulu Winter

Having emerged on the scene in 2010, Zulu Winter released their debut single, ‘Never Leave’, through Double Denim last November. A month later they signed to Play It Again Sam and their first album, ‘Language’, is now coming out via that label on 14 May. To celebrate that pending release they will play The Great Escape (at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar) tonight at 9.45pm, before heading out on a UK tour supporting Keane later in the month.

Ahead of all that, we asked drummer Guy Henderson to put together a playlist for us. Having done so, he explained: “This is a little cross section of tracks by some of the artists that are inspiring me at the moment. Some, like Caribou and Portishead, I’ve been into for many years and they’ve influenced our debut record quite strongly. Some other music here, such as Anstam and Alex Cortex, is stuff I’ve stumbled across more recently. Hope you enjoy it…”

01 Modeselektor – Blue Clouds
I started to get into these guys’ last album ‘Happy Birthday’ a couple of years ago and have become a big fan since. I was also totally hooked on the Moderat album they released in collaboration with Apparat… And the two collaborations with Thom Yorke on this album are incredible.

02 Ron Trent & Chez Damier – Morning Factory
I came across Chez Damier from Floating Points’ Boiler Room set and have been looking out for any tracks I can find ever since. A good Friday night track this.

03 Anstam – Baldwin
I’ve discovered this German artist very recently. I love the way in this track, as with all of his work, on the surface there’s a darkness but also a lot of beauty and intensity. It’s a track I keep discovering new layers to.

04 Holy Fuck – Stilettos
Probably my favourite live band. This track from their latest album sums up the crazy live experience and the unbelievable tempo that propels their show forward.

05 Caribou – Found Out
The way the rhythms interlock on this track is so unusual and works so well. At times it feels so fragile but always keeps the strong groove at the centre.

06 Portishead – Chase The Tear
Portishead have been a big influence to us and this track released after ‘Third’ is very beautiful in its simplicity. One of those hypnotic grooves that you get locked into and could go on listening to for hours.

07 Girls – Vomit
My favourite show of the year so far was catching Girls at SxSW. The dynamics in this track are incredibly powerful. The way it explodes into the first chorus is so euphoric.

08 Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is The Move
‘Bitte Orca’ is one of my favourite records of the last few years and this track always stood out for me. A great Saturday night track.

09 Daphni – Ye Ye
This is from Dan Snaith’s (Caribou) recently emerged side project and I’m hoping an album might come at some point. Got all his usual mind blowing rhythmic interplay with a bit more of a dancefloor readiness.

10 Alex Cortex – 6
Another artist I stumbled across very recently. So many unusual grainy sounds have been put together for this track and I love the space within it. Make sure you’ve got some bassy speakers to catch that sub.
