Playlist: WALL

Wall

Solo artist WALL, aka singer-producer Lyla Foy, released her debut single, ‘Magazine’, through the Black Cab Sessions label offshoot BCS Records last year. This week she returned with a brand new five track EP, entitled ‘Shoestring’. Next week she’ll play her first UK show since getting back from her first trip to America, with a headline performance at Bush Hall in London on 11 Apr. Then in May you can catch her at The Great Escape.

Ahead of all that, we asked Lyla to put together a playlist for us, which she did, explaining: “My playlist is focused mainly on women, or songs about us. I think everyone wants to find something they can relate to in music, so I look for romantic lyrics, though don’t have time for anything that takes itself too seriously. Romance is one thing but tell us about it in a way that’s poetic, honest or entertaining please. I struggle to find as much originality in new music, maybe it’s just because there’s so much of it. Anyway there’s a mix of old and new here, as I suppose I shouldn’t be frozen in the past!”

WALL’S TEN
Subscribe to this playlist on Spotify, and then read on to find out more about Lyla’s choices.

01 Electrelane – In Berlin
Our friend Alex made us a playlist for our European tour and this was on it – reminded me how much I love the atmosphere of this tune.

02 Angel Olsen – Tiniest Seed
She’s one of those artists I want to keep to myself, but I want other people to love her too, so I suppose I’ll share my obsession with Angel Olsen. There is nothing phoney at all, anywhere, ever about her. And this one’s my favourite.

03 Blondie – Sunday Girl
We bumped into Debbie Harry last week at a radio station in New York. Apparently my dad squealed with glee when my mum told him. Still got it!

04 Foxygen – San Francisco
They’re nuts but you have to love them. And the video for this song made me question my sexuality.

05 Connie Francis – Lipstick On Your Collar
Yes it’s cute, don’t feel bad about that.

06 The Velvet Underground – Femme Fatale
There’s something so expressive about Nico that makes me love her. She’s a terrible singer. I’ve been told I’m a terrible singer countless times too.

07 Local Natives – Airplanes
We were out touring with these boys, and the crowd went mad when they played ‘Airplanes’. I have fond memories of dancing by the side of the stage and being told off for taking pictures with the flash on.

08 The Shangri-Las – I Can Never Go Home Anymore
If there’s one thing I want in life, it’s to do spoken word on one of my tracks. So far I haven’t been able to pull it off. If I listen to this enough times I’m sure it will happen one day.

09 Hurray For The Riff Raff – Look Out Mama
This band are great. Saw them in London a few months back and they are everything you wouldn’t expect. This is their best song.

10 Wild Belle – Shine
I’m not sure anything beats ‘Keep You’, but I’m giving the whole Wild Belle album a spin at the moment, and this one also stands out.
