Trailer Trash Tracys

London quartet Trailer Trash Tracys first materialised in 2009 with double A-side debut ‘Candy Girl/You Wish You Were Red’, later touring with The xx and White Lies even as vocalist Suzanne Aztoria – then a customer care worker – and guitarist/graphic designer Jimmy Lee kept at their day jobs.

Having allied with drummer Dayo James and bassist Adam Jaffrey, the band then signed to Domino Records’ sister label Double Six for the release of their debut album, ‘Ester’. Forging an elegant line in stylish noir-pop (‘Engelhart’s Arizona’, ‘Black Circle’) and swoonsome shoegaze (latest single ‘Strangling Good Guys’), the LP came out last week.

TTT play tonight at The Lexington in London, after which they’ll press on with the remainder of a miniature UK tour. In the meantime, they’ve obligingly put together a playlist featuring selected sounds from the artists they most admire.

01 Nico – Win A Few
A lesser known track by Nico on her final album (‘Camera Obscura’, 1985). It sounds fresh – 60s icon, 80s drum machines, and Gregorian harmonies.

02 Moondog – Frost Flower
From the album entitled ‘A New Sound Of An Old Instrument’ – ahh bless him, even then there was a preoccupation of creating that “new sound”. Who would have thought church organs could sound so groovy?

03 Philip Glass – Resource
Simple arpeggios that draw you in from the start.

04 Grace Jones – I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango)
Grace Jones myth: Did she beat up her former husband Dolph Lundgren? Who knows? The bedroom scene with her and Roger Moore in the Bond movie ‘A View To A Kill’ scared me mentally as a kid though. Either way, this track is lovely.

05 Carly Simon – Nobody Does It Better
While we are on the Bond subject… best Bond song?

06 King Midas Sound – Tears
I like the snare on this track.

07 Alphaville – Summer In Berlin
Unsung heroes of 80s pop. Their debut album has big 80s hits, like ‘Big In Japan’ and ‘Forever Young’.

08 David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto – Forbidden Colours
This track was on the soundtrack for a film starring David Bowie called ‘Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence’.

09 Der Plan – Der Dieb
The idea of minimalism that influenced ‘Ester’.

10 George Clinton – Atomic Dog
I love the production on this album. We are hoping he will produce our second album!
