Sub Focus

Having first begun producing drum n bass tracks while at school, Sub Focus, aka Nick Douwma signed to Ram Records in 2003 and fast rose up the ranks of the genre with a series of well received singles. In 2009 he released his eponymous debut album, cracking the UK top 40 and rising to number one in the dance chart with its second single, ‘Rock It’. More recently he found yet more mainstream success co-writing and producing Example’s ‘Kickstarts’.

In April, Sub Focus released ‘Falling Down’, the first track from his second album, as a free download, quickly racking up over 50,000 downloads and receiving heavy airplay on Radio 1. The first single proper, ‘Out The Blue’, which features vocals from singer-songwriter Alice Gold, followed later the same month.

With the as-yet-untitled new album due out this autumn, we asked Sub Focus to put together a playlist for us. Here’s what he had to say about his choices: “Here is a selection of music that I have been enjoying recently, I wanted to choose a bunch of tunes that you wouldn’t normally hear me play out in a DJ set”.

01 Major Lazer – Get Free
Love the vocals in this one, the natural tuning really adds to the character.

02 Jessie Ware – Running
Love this, the Disclosure remix is great also.

03 Alex Clare – Up All Night
Love the excitement of this song, good to see this guy finally getting some props.

04 College – A Real Hero
From the ‘Drive’ soundtrack, I just really enjoy the simplicity of this.

05 Madeon – Icarus
Went on tour with him in Australia recently, seventeen years old and a seriously talented kid.

06 Double 99 – RIP Groove
Recently been playing this again in my sets – an old garage classic.

07 M83 – Midnight City
Been a fan of this guy for a while. Quality sax solo.

08 Maceo Plex – Can’t Leave You
Probably my fave track from this guy – alternates between funky and dark really nicely.

09 Joe Goddard – Gabriel
Love the speeded up feel on the vocals.

10 The Maccabees – Given To The Wild
I drove through the Big Sur in California recently and this album was the perfect soundtrack.
