Playlist: My Tiger My Timing

Following a run of single releases, My Tiger My Timing finally release their debut album, ‘Celeste’, via Snakes & Ladders this week. Spanning a wide range of genres from indie-pop through to high life, the album has rightly been receiving acclaim from all over the place. You can catch the band plying their trade live at a number of festivals over the rest of the summer, as well as at shows in London at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on 18 Jul and the Bussey Building on 26 Aug.
In the run up to the album release, we asked vocalist Anna Vincent to put together a playlist for us, of which she said: “It’s so difficult choosing just ten tracks because we like such a huge range of stuff, but I guess these songs here are ones which we come back to again and again, the tunes we play on tour, the tunes we play to get us revved up before a show, and ultimately, the tunes which, at some level, have sat in our subconscious and inspired our own album ‘Celeste’. There’s new stuff here, as well as older stuff, but I think it all has one thing in common – it’s great, weird, brilliant pop music”.

01 Late Of The Pier – Focker
This is a tour bus favourite and always gets hands in the air. I think ‘Fantasy Black Channel’ is one of the greatest albums of the last decade. Seriously underrated.
02 Japan – Still Life In Mobile Homes
I think Japan must have influenced Late Of The Pier, I can hear certain similarities. They’ve certainly influenced us anyway, I love the weirdness of this song, they’re like a more avant garde Roxy Music.
03 Twin Shadow – Slow
We saw Twin Shadow play at The Lexington last year and it was hands down one of the best shows I’ve seen, pure live spirit. This album is incredible too, perfect melancholy pop.
04 Underworld – Born Slippy
Another tour bus banger – we blasted this out crossing the German-Czech border recently as the sun went down, it was a bit of a moment. This track is so heady and atmospheric.
05 All Saints – Black Coffee
I recently rediscovered All Saints and remembered what great songwriters they were. I think this is their greatest moment, as lush as The Beach Boys.
06 Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is The Move
Probably the greatest gig I’ve ever been to, pure musical joy. This is like experimental R&B made by a bird of paradise. Words can’t describe my love for this. Except these ones.
07 Roxy Music – More Than This
I remember my mum and dad playing this when I was little, and I remember the needles of the VU meters on the tape deck swaying back and forth, and my mum and dad dancing softly and I remember thinking this was the sound of the grown-up world and one day I would come to understand it. I still don’t though.
08 Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You
I think this might be the greatest song of the 90s – every part of the song is so well crafted, the production is cool and understated and it just sounds so sexy.
09 The Specials – Ghost Town
Such an incredible atmosphere, such a simmeringly angry song – still so relevant both sonically and thematically. Why isn’t anyone saying this kind of stuff nowadays?
10 Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) (Live)
Too beautiful, one of the songs which inspired us to start this band – melancholy, sweet, pop music.
