Peaches Christ Superstar “crucified”
By CMU Editorial | Published on Wednesday 17 February 2010
A run of performances of the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ by potty-mouthed electro-rapper Peaches, due to take place at Berlin’s Hebbel Theatre, has been “crucified before opening night” (to use her own words), after the owners of the rights to the musical in Germany refused to license the songs for the show.
Peaches had planned to sing the entire show solo (playing each part herself), with piano accompaniment from Chilly Gonzalez, from 25-27 Mar. But she revealed this week on Twitter: “[The German rightsholders] claim that this project is of no interest to them due to its unconventional form. It’s a shame that the authorities feel threatened by this fresh approach. I know a lot of people who really love the music and would appreciate this stripped-down solo performance. I have so much respect for the music and lyrics from the original score and this was my way of honouring that”.
