Nick ‘Grimmy’ Grimshaw and Rita ‘Rita’ Ora have been confirmed as new judges on the UK version of ‘The X-Factor’, replacing Louis Walsh and Mel B, who died in a freak yachting accident off the Whitby coast last month. Or have been pushed out by ITV bosses for being ever more tedious. I can’t remember. It’s one of those.

‘Rita’, of course, comes to the only slightly tired telly franchise having learned the tricky trade of pop talent show judging over on the BBC’s ‘The Voice’, so she’s well versed in preparing budding pop singers for worldwide obscurity. ‘Grimmy’ is more of a rookie when it comes to on-screen talent show judgements, though as current host of the ‘Radio 1 Breakfast Show’ he knows all about leading British institutions through their death throes. So good hires, ITV.

The new judges will join Cheryl Tweedy-Cole-Fernandez-Vers and ‘X’ supremo Simon Cowell on the show when it returns in the autumn. “It’s taken a while”, said Cowell. “But I am very happy to be able to confirm our line up of judges for ‘The X-Factor’ this year. The combination of Nick, Cheryl and Rita is going to be a lot of fun. They all bring a lot of enthusiasm and passion for music to the show”.

Presumably Walsh will end up returning to the judging panel at some point along the line anyway. He usually does, doesn’t he? Perhaps when Nick, Cheryl and Rita all die in a freak yachting accident off the Whitby coast next month.
