US TV network NBC has picked up Norwegian talent show format ‘The Stream’, which attempts to harness the power of the internet to discover interesting new artists while simultaneously narrowing the chances of actually finding any.

As previously reported, the show asks hopeful contestants to upload videos of themselves performing to the programme’s website, which are then voted on by the public. The 100 highest rated contenders then go forward to the next stage of the competition, where A&Rs from the three major labels choose 40 acts they’d actually like to work with.

At the end of each week of the actual series, each label signs one act each and releases a track as a single. After that, the acts’ progress through the show will be determined by the number of streams they get on Spotify.

No, it doesn’t sound like it would make a very good TV show, but apparently NBC was impressed, so a US version of the show will now be developed.

“‘The Stream’ brilliantly uses technology and social media to draw music lovers in and make them a part of the process”, says NBC Entertainment’s Paul Telegdy. “We’re excited to discover talent in this modern way and connect the best artists with the industry’s top starmakers”.

Yeah.
