Single Review: My American Heart – There Are More Frightening Things (Bodog Music)

My American Heart

I thought emo had been done to death. I can sort of see the appeal of the kind of pop-tastic heart-wrenchers that Fall Out Boy and Panic! wail all over the place, and I quite enjoy the intensity of more hardcore bands like Thrice and Glassjaw, but there’s just no need for this kind of blandness taking up valuable space on our shelves and servers. Hearing this makes me feel exactly like I did seven years ago listening to bands like Adema and Trust Company try to clutch desperately at the moth-decimated coat tails of nu-metal. The song does wield a riff that is more head-bangingly enjoyable than a lot of its peers, but what good is one riff in a time when ‘Guitar Hero’ rules supreme and Metallica and Guns N Roses are back? Like taking a pea shooter to sort out Iraq, you wonder what they were ever really hoping to achieve. ME
