Single Review: Mr Scruff & Roots Manuva – Nice Up The Function (Ninja Tune)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 30 March 2009
Your one stop shop for jazz lounge funk and a nice warm cuppa is back with his fifth single from the brilliant Ninja Tune. This time ol’ Scruffy has brought along rap megalith Roots Manuva to lay down his powerful vocals on ‘Nice Up The Function’.
This sounds hugely promising, but it seems Scruff is clutching at precarious straws. Evidently a fan of risk, backing up Manuva is a weak squelch of a bassline and nothing else – this leaves him the gargantuan task of wedging in a chorus, which inevitably turns out to be the most forgettable four bars since that pub crawl we don’t talk about. A slew of remixes attempt to apologise, but you still feel cheated. If you want to hear Scruff in his prime, listen to his previous four singles. With this weak fifth, he lets himself down and exposes Roots Manuva dangerously close to self-destruction. GB
