David Cameron’s Intellectual Property Adviser Mike Weatherley will lead a music rights-focused strand at the 2014 Great Escape Convention it was announced this morning.

The CMU Insights-programmed TGE Convention, which is, in case you forgot, the UK’s premiere music business conference sitting within Europe’s leading festival for new music, will centre around six core half-day strands in 2014, a new programming approach that will allow delegates to focus in more depth on the key issues the music business now faces, and offer more opportunities to question and network with the experts involved.

‘Maximising Music Rights’ is the first of those six strands. Presented in association with PPL and PRS For Music, the session will include an overview of the music rights sector in 2014, looking at how different revenue streams are working for artists, labels and publishers around the world, and at how the industry is rising to the challenge to simplify the licensing process.

Reps from PPL, Kobalt and the artist community will then lead a debate on the increased importance of neighbouring rights, before a focus on the tools and services being used by labels to manage and curtail the unlicensed distribution of their content online. CMU Business Editor and TGE Convention Programmer Chris Cooke will then talk to Mike Weatherley, who is MP for Hove, about current thinking on IP issues in Whitehall and Westminster.

Details about the other five CMU Insights-curated convention strands taking place at TGE next May will be confirmed in early 2014, alongside news about The Great Escape’s ever popular In Conversation programme and DIY Day for the grass roots music community. The Great Escape takes place from 8-10 May next year, and delegate passes are now available at the special early bird rate of £145 from the TGE website.

Meanwhile, have some quotes from the key people involved in ‘Maximising Music Rights’…

Mike Weatherley MP: “It is a huge honour to welcome The Great Escape to Brighton & Hove once again. It’s a fantastic event filling our music venues and debating halls with all things music related. As the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Intellectual Property Rights, it is especially gratifying for me to see support for our creative industries raised to such a high level by all those involved – organisers, artists and supporters. Thank you”.

PPL CEO Peter Leathem: “PPL is very pleased to be supporting The Great Escape once again this year and we are looking forward to participating in the Maximising Music Rights strand and especially the panel on ‘neighbouring rights’. This is an increasingly important revenue stream for our performer members. We will be sharing tips and advice on how artists and producers should be capitalising on it and will be happy to answer any questions that come from the floor”.

PRS For Music CEO Robert Ashcroft: “This debate couldn’t be more timely. PRS for Music is licensing new online services every day, all of which are vastly changing the music industry landscape we’ve been accustomed to. Some of these new business models are becoming leading platforms for music discovery but are creating an increasingly complex digital landscape. The Great Escape’s Maximising Music Rights strand will provide vital insight to those wanting to tackle the new issues surrounding intellectual property. We are also delighted to be involved alongside new IP adviser, Mike Weatherly MP. Mike is a music lover as well as politician and has always been a great champion of copyright”.

TGE Festival Director Kat Morris: “We’re delighted to be announcing the first instalment of our convention programme and are privileged for Mike Weatherley MP to be leading our music rights strand. The Great Escape convention will break with the norm next year by offering six more in-depth strands. Delegates will still be able to dip in and out as they wish, but, by having more time dedicated to each topic, we’ll be able to cover each more thoroughly. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to Brighton for the ninth Great Escape, which will be our biggest and best festival to date. Roll on May”.
