Mazes detail new record, 2013 tour
By CMU Editorial | Published on Tuesday 6 November 2012
FatCat Records-signed trio Mazes have just introduced their new record, ‘Ores & Minerals’. They say it’s “far more original and broader than the first one” – ie 2011’s still-pretty-original ‘A Thousand Heys’ – something they will demonstrate when the new album is released on 18 Feb 2013.
The band’s Jack Cooper begins by talking about the new LP’s first track ‘Bodies’, saying: “It was the first song, like most of the album, written to repetitive loops and drones. The demo had an Arthur Russell drum loop, because it sounded [like] how Neil drums, so I guess that’s where we were at”.
He adds: “Without saying ‘there’s always been a dance element to our music’, I think we wanted to write songs that people might be able to move to, if the mood was to take them and there’s something incredibly satisfying in repetition”.
And now, a SoundCloud player featuring ‘Bodies’, a tracklisting, and a list of Mazes’ 2013 live dates:
