Single Review: Lemonade – Big Weekend (Sunday Best)

Lemonade

Is it really twenty years since Madchester exploded into life, showering us with colourful drugs, colourful fashion and, well, colourful pop stars? Apparently so. Whether Brooklyn trio Lemonade are familiar with the period is unknown, but ‘Big Weekend’, with its hands-in-the-air synth stabs, carnivalesque percussion and indecipherable vocals buried deep in the mix, is vaguely redolent of Happy Mondays at their least baggy. The urgency of more recent punk-funkers like Radio 4 springs to mind too, and is probably a more pertinent comparison, whilst there’s a faint though possibly misleading scent of grime in the air too. Accompanying remixes from L-Vis, Delorean and Sunday Best’s mysteriously nameless in house remixer are all perfectly respectable, if hardly groundbreaking. Like ‘Big Weekend’ itself, they’re fun, but inconsequential and easily forgettable. MS
