Kurran And The Wolfnotes

Having previously played in electro-rock outfit Trash Fashion, Kurran Karbal swapped synths for an alt-country style for his new project, five-piece Kurran And The Wolfnotes. After spending time in the States, Abu Dhabi and Zurich, he settled in London where the band was born last year. Debut single ‘Whatabitch’ was released in late 2009 and the band have been touring and writing ever since. Having released a brand new single, ‘Your Four Limbs’, on Chess Club Records last week, and with a show at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg tonight, we talked to main-man Kurran to ask the Same Six Questions.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
It was the likes of Rancid and NOFX that made me want to be in a band. They had so much attitude, and their music was readily accessible for people like me to play. Which is a nice way of saying the songs were easy to play. I was about fourteen, so commitment wasn’t one of my strong suits.

Q2 What inspired your upcoming album?
Well it’s our first, so I can’t really remember. It’s been such a long time coming. I think getting to make a record in itself was what really inspired us to put the songs together.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
I usually bring some basic chords and lyrics to the guys and we just keep thrashing over it until it makes sense.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
We’ve been listening to loads of Fleetwood Mac and old The Band records in preparation for this album. But most of what we listen to in our free time is a bit heavier. Bands like Brand New and Manchester Orchestra are two of our favourites.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Probably not too much. I’m not very confident about my singing, so I try to make the lyrics interesting to distract people. So, “Listen to the lyrics, and you won’t think it’s so bad”, that’s what I’d say.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
We want to try to capture more of the rawness of the songs than we have with our previous releases. I hope it sounds really naked and honest because I’m sick of everything I hear sounding so polished. Get it to sound good organically and put some mics in front of it. As for the future, I hope the next record doesn’t leave us in so much debt.
