Kissy Sell Out

You might know Kissy Sell Out in any number of guises. He’s a DJ, remixer, radio and TV presenter, label boss and musician, highly regarded in all of them for both his talent and enthusiasm. Last week he also went head to head with Stephen Fry at the Cambridge University Union to debate the relevance of classical music to today’s youth.

Right now, we’re going to talk about Kissy the musician, as he’s releasing his second album, ‘Wild Romance’, on 23 May. His debut, ‘Youth’, was a collection of pop tracks which recalled the highs and lows of his teenage years. Album two sees him moving on, taking inspiration from his eclectic Radio 1 show to create something that seamlessly melds everything from pop to electro house to dubstep.

He says: “The album is full of breakdowns and basslines. Every second drop is different. It’s me all over, which is cool. I like the idea of doing things that no one else is doing and being an innovator”.

Ahead of the album release on Monday, we asked Kissy to put together a Powers Of Ten playlist for us. Before pressing play on his choices, he set the scene: “I’m in the San City High studio. It’s quite late at night, but it’s moments like this that are perfect for sharing tunes with people, I think”.

01 Aphrodite – Woman That Rolls
I used to love this tune when I was at school, it’s a really cool drum n bass tune. I love Aphrodite, as well. I met him once and I was so star struck I could barely speak. This is one of my favourite tunes by him by quite a long way. See what you think.

02 Felix Da Housecat – Rocket Ride
Felix Da Housecat is another personal hero of mine and I just love this tune, it’s one of my favourite things he’s ever done, I think. [Unfortunately, Spotify doesn’t have the original, so we’ve put the Soulwax remix on the playlist]

03 Flux Pavilion – Normalize
This is the only dubstep tune on this playlist. I’m a big fan of Flux Pavilion at the moment, and I know I’m not alone. I think the music he’s making is just fantastic. There’s a lot of double time rhythms on it, which is probably the reason that I like it, cos sometimes them dubstep tunes just ain’t fast enough for me. I play this track a lot in my DJ sets.

04 Kissy Sell Out – Redrinkulous (Brimmer Remix)
I guess this list wouldn’t be complete without me playing one Kissy tune, you’ve gotta let me get away with that. But it’s kind of an opportunity for me to biggup a young individual called Brimmer who did this remix of my track, ‘Redrinkulous’. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on this year. He did a fantastic unofficial remix of Hazard & Distorted Minds recently and I’ve been playing other remixes by him for a long old time – so turn it up!

05 DSK – What Would We Do (Sol Brothers Mix)
I hope wherever you are, you’re dancing. This is the Sol Brothers remix of DSK’s ‘What Would We Do’, which I used to have on vinyl when I was at school and used to practice DJing with in my bedroom all the time. It’s just a good tune and it hasn’t really aged that much. For quite a while I used to play this in my Kissy DJ sets.

06 Terravita – Nail In The Coffin
Out with the old school and in with the new, I’m really into these guys at the moment. Some of you might know that Hot Pink Delorean are signed to my record label, San City High. They also make records under the name Terravita. They’ve just done a remix for my track ‘Homesick’, which is fantastic, but this single, ‘Nail In The Coffin’, is an absolute blinder. I was given this about six months or so before it came out and I’ve still not got bored of it. So, a bit of drumstep for you, see what you think.

07 Attack Yourself – Long Time No See (Botnek Remix)
This is just a wicked remix by Botnek of Attack Yourself.

08 Stuff Ya Disco – Malfunktion
I’m having fun picking all these tunes. I really like this Stuff Ya Disco tune, I’m been mashing it up a bit in my sets recently.

09 Those Dancing Days – Spaceherosuites
Next I’ve got the only indie tune on here, but I absolutely love this. I love the lead singer’s voice. Those Dancing Days are a fantastic band. They’ve just had a new album out, which is also really great, but the first one still pips it for me, and in particular this track is a personal favourite. You’re gonna love this one.

10 Hervé – Together
I thought we’d end with a banger, I hope you’ve enjoyed all these. You know this tune already, I bet. Hervé’s a good friend of mine, he’s a very influential guy in the electro house scene and I think the success he’s getting at the moment has been long overdue. What a great track to end on.
