Kanye and Jay-Z set to break iTunes record
By CMU Editorial | Published on Wednesday 10 August 2011
It turns out the collaborative album by Jay-Z and Kanye West, ‘Watch The Throne’, is quite popular. Who would have guessed? The album is currently on track to hit the top of the Billboard chart in the US and will likely break iTunes’ first week sales record. The album, as previously reported, is available exclusively through iTunes in America until Friday, which has presumably helped it along the way to this record.
The album currently holding the biggest first week seller title on the Apple download service is Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’, which sold 282,000 copies in its first seven days on sale in 2008. While Chris Martin et al are set to lose that title, sources have told Billboard that ‘Viva La Vida’ will retain the first day sales record on iTunes, ‘Watch The Throne’ having come up 20,000 downloads shy of Coldplay’s 175,000 sales in 24 hours.
