Playlist: Great Escape 2010

By | Published on Saturday 15 May 2010

In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re in the middle of The Great Escape music convention in Brighton. Once again thousands of music people have flocked to our favourite seaside city for three days of talking, debating, networking, gigging, showcasing, drinking and other fun verbs. Over 300 bands will play at over 22 of Brighton’s finest venues.

To celebrate this fact, we asked Jeff Hemmings, one of Brighton’s best connected music people, to put together a special Spotify playlist featuring bands playing at TGE this year – some local, some international, some old, some new. And he did just that!

Says Jeff: “Once again The Great Escape offers an unparalleled opportunity to see some of the most interesting and exciting acts from around the globe. From the established Groove Armada to the almost unknown Maverick Sabre, plus a decent sprinkling of homegrown talent, you really can’t go wrong!”

Jeff is not only Music Editor of Brighton’s leading free entertainment mag Latest 7, but he also presents a show on the city’s Reverb Radio and programmes gigs at the Latest Music Bar. In the latter guise he has put together three showcase events as part of the Alternative Escape prgoramme during TGE – featuring sets from Stackridge, Jo Harman Project, The Illustrators, Mike Mayfield, The Skyline, Kovak, The Julian Tulk Band, Lecarla, Proceed, Ortpilot, Young Electrics, The Perils, Gloria Cycles, The Valentines, Sweet Sweet Lies and Common Tongues. Which is quite a lot to be getting on with in itself!

01 Band Of Skulls – Death By Diamonds And Pearls
A minimalist nu-rock outfit with the twinkle of White Stripes in their eyes, but also with the nous of late 60s and early 70s hard rock.

02 John Smith – Hands

Another throwback to a bygone but with contemporary resonance. The ghost of John Martyn no less; sleepy, dreamy, bewitching, but also animated and edgy.

03 The Slits – Shoplifting

Veteran punks show how to be concise, and to get to the point with their punky-reggae fusion. Punk never did die, did it?

04 Fionn Regan – Put A Penny In The Slot

Simply heartwarming stuff from this Dylan-esque performer. Literate, easy-going, a true artist.

05 White Rabbits – They Done Wrong

Pop class but with an edge from this Brooklyn outfit, but it’s live where their overwhelming enthusiasm and energy really grabs hold.

06 Tunng – Hustle

Consistently inventive twisted folk. An epic, banjo and piano led track. Upbeat, melancholy and lyrically brilliant, all at the same time.

07 Groove Armada – Look Me In The Eye Sister

Re-invention time again for GA. A spiky, trippy slice of electro-rock with She Keeps Bees’ Jess Larrabee on vocals.

08 Japanese Voyeurs – That Love Sound

Doll with knife vocals meets Nirvana-esque grunge. Dirty rock n roll that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

09 The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster – Psychosis Safari

Brighton psychobillys who don’t hold any punches, musically and theatrically. Lovely bunch of people too…

10 Darwin Deez – Constellations

Tache, perm and hairband. Despite that, his lo-fi, DIY pop is easy on the ear, full of little hooks and nice touches. Perfect to finish off this playlist.
