So who had Jason Iley in the “they’re obviously gonna replace Nick Gatfield at Sony Music UK whatever they’re saying right now, aren’t they, of course they are, we all know that, it’s a dead cert, no doubt about it, but who will get the job” sweepstake? I somehow ended up with Steve Brookstein, which never seemed likely, despite all the sterling work he’s done PRing Sony Music’s bread-winning Syco division over the years.

Yes, Iley, the former Mercury Records chief over at Universal Music UK, last seen doing top man duties for the Roc Nation record label, has been appointed CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland, replacing Nick Gatfield, who departed somewhat by surprise back in February. He will report into both Sony Music top man Doug Morris and Sony Music International CEO Edgar Berger, and work alongside Nicola Tuer, who was promoted to the role of UK COO after Gatfield’s exit and who has been leading the division since then.

Confirming the new hire, Morris told reporters: “Jason has played a critical role in developing global hits for some of the biggest artists in the industry over the last decade. We couldn’t be happier to have him leading our team in the UK”.

Meanwhile Iley himself added: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity to lead the UK company under Doug Morris. I look forward to working with some of the best artists in the world and the extraordinary team of executives at Sony Music. Having started my career in music at Sony, I feel like I’m coming home. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to Jay Z, who has been an inspiration to work with at Roc Nation”.
